How It Works

  • Getting Started - Schools & Groups

The goal of Kilometer Kids is for participants to run 26.2 miles over an 11-week period, virtually completing the Atlanta Marathon as they track their miles online and earning cool incentive prizes along the way. Below are helpful links to get started:

  • Guidelines to Get Moving - Schools & Groups

Kilometer Kids is a fun and flexible running program designed to get kids in the community active! Below are the guidelines for completing the program:

    • Kilometer Kids sessions take place twice a week. While we encourage your school or group to be active on a daily basis, the online tracking tool will only allow you to input a participant's mileage twice a week.
    • In order to complete the program in 11 weeks, Kilometer Kids should log 1.25 miles each session.
    • If your participants need longer to complete the program, that is okay. There is no penalty for taking longer than 11 weeks to complete the program.
    • Kilometer Kids can earn mileage through running games, drills or by logging minutes strictly through running, the most important thing is to get kids moving! Curriculum and game ideas can be found under helpful resources to get started, but you can tailor the program to fit your needs.
    • Practice can take place at an outdoor track, soccer field, park or trails.

  • Registering Your School or Group

For a school or group to participate in Kilometer Kids, a site coordinator will need to create an account. Below are the directions for registering your school or group:

    • First, click the yellow "sign up" button on the homepage.
    • From there, you will be directed to a page asking if you are registering as a family or a group. Select group.
    • After you select group, the registration form will come up. The first page of the registration process requests information about the site coordinator and group.
    • After entering all the information, agree to the waiver and press "continue".
    • The next step is to enter information about all the participating children (first name, last name, age, gender and race).
    • After you have submitted the information online, please download the participants' waiver here. The form can also be accessed by clicking the blue "download waiver" on the registration page. This waiver must be printed out, distributed to each child and returned as a group to the Atlanta Track Club. Waivers can be mailed (3097 E. Shadownlawn, Atlanta, GA 30305), emailed (kilometerkids@atlantatrackclub.org) or faxed to 404.364.0708.
    • You will not be able to start the program until all waivers have been turned in to the Atlanta Track Club. Once all the children's waivers have been received, an ATC Admin will turn on the program for your school or group, and you will be able to begin the program from the Kilometer Kids Dashboard.
  • The Kilometer Kids Dashboard

The Kilometer Kids Dashboard is your control center for the program. Once you have registered your school or group for Kilometer Kids, and all the waivers have been turned in, you will need to sign in to access Kilometer Kids Dashboard. The Dashboard can also be accessed by logging in using your email address and password created at the time of registration. The Dashboard allows you to:

    • Track and add miles.
    • View earned prizes. Learn more about incentive items here.
    • View interactive mileage chart.
    • Edit a child's information.
    • Delete mileage if necessary.

After each running session you will need to access the Kilometer Kids Dashboard to add and track participant's mileage. It is extremely important that you track the mileage online to ensure that they receive their earned incentive items.

  • Adding Mileage - For Schools & Groups

After each running session, it is extremely important that you track participant's mileage online to ensure that they receive their earned incentive items. There are two ways to add mileage to a child's account:

    • From the Kilometer Kids Dashboard
      • To add mileage to a participant's account from the Dashboard, check their name, select a mileage value (.50, .75, 1.00 or 1.25) from drop-down menu at the top and then click the yellow "add" button. This will immediately add miles to the participant's mileage total.
      • If you would like to add the total mileage for every participant in your school or group, then there is a quick add feature. Simply check the first box next to "First Name" and this will select all the children within the Dashboard. Next, select the mileage they ran from the drop-down menu and click "add". This will automatically add the mileage to all the children participating from your group or school.
      • Adding miles from the Kilometer Kids Dashboard is a quick option, but does not show the virtual progress the participant has made on the Atlanta Marathon course.
      • If you chose to add miles directly from the Dashboard, then you can view the animation later on by clicking the green "view interactive mileage chart". When the page loads, the animation will occur showing the participant has run towards their goal of completing 26.2 miles. If you've already added the miles, then you will not need to do anything else.
    • From the Interactive Mileage Chart
      • To access a participant's interactive mileage chart from the Dashboard, simply click the green "view interactive mileage" button next to the correct child's name. Next, select a value (.50, .75, 1.00 or 1.25) from the drop-down menu at the top and click the yellow "add" button. This will immediately add miles to the participant's mileage total.
      • The interactive mileage chart is the platform that virtually takes participants on the Atlanta Marathon as they track their mileage online. After entering the mileage, a quote bubble will appear with an updated mileage total, and the map will animate to show how far along the Atlanta Marathon course the participant has run, highlighting sites along the course.
  • Interactive Mileage Chart

The interactive mileage chart features Alex (the ant), the Kilometer Kids mascot who takes participants on a tour of the Atlanta Marathon course as they log their miles online.

Through the interactive mileage chart participants can:

    • Log their miles.
    • See how many miles they have to go until the next prize.
    • View earned prizes.
    • See highlights of the Atlanta Marathon course.
    • Visualize their running accomplishments.
